A national icon and a symbol of Canada’s North! Order yours today!
Springtime brings a burst of colourful blooms across the tundra of Canada's North, where the barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus) can be found in large herds along the wide-open landscape. It is also the calving season, when the female caribou (cow) gives birth to a calf. This precocious offspring is rather quick to stand on its wobbly legs within the first hour of life; before the day is through, it has become steady enough to trot alongside its mother. To improve its chances of survival in its first year, the young stays near its mother for protection from predators such as wolves, grizzly bears and eagles. It is also nursed exclusively for the first month, before it turns to grazing for the flowers, lichens or mushrooms that will build its strength for the coming winter.

About the Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Glen Loates, your coin features colour over the engraved portrait of a young barren-ground caribou. Barely a few weeks old, the calf is not yet weaned from its mother's milk as it looks up and turns its head to curiously face the viewer. Selective colour enhances the detailed engraving while recreating the calf's tan- and white-coloured fur, along with the darker colours of its eyes, nose and hooves. At its feet is a bright mix of pastel colours, which convey the springtime explosion of colourful new growth on the tundra in Canada's North, where the lichen, purple saxifrage and forbs provide a nutritious meal for the engraved female caribou standing next to her young. Both mother and child will need their strength to make the long trek across the wide-open landscape depicted in the engraved background, where the nursery herd will join other caribou on the coastal plains.
Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beauty box.
